EVKAF has located the 300-year-old Historical Turkish Cemetery in the village of Akçay. The surrounding walls of the cemetery were built and informative signs were put up.
As a result of the archive studies carried out by the Cyprus Foundations Administration (Evkaf), they determined the location of the 300-year-old Historical Turkish Cemetery in the village of Akçay, built the surrounding walls of the cemetery and placed informative signs.
In 1878, when the island of Cyprus passed to the British Colonial Administration, there were 596 Turkish cemeteries in Cyprus.
The reorganization of the Akçay Historical Turkish Cemetery, which is only one of the Turkish cemeteries destroyed over the years, was welcomed by the villagers.
Erol Çuvalcıoğlu, one of the residents of Akçay, who lived in Akçay before 1974, stated that; "I am originally from Akçay. Since my childhood, our elders said that there was an old Turkish Cemetery here and it was destroyed. In retrospect, there were the tombs of our ancient ancestors here. I would like to thank the Cyprus Foundations Administration for this work," he said.
