Akkavuk Mosque
Especially common in the Ottoman period, the masjids are small buildings without a minbar, without a minaret, without a shed, and with a single space, which meet the needs of the people of the neighborhood and their shopkeepers, except for Friday prayers. They have not survived to the present day because they were demolished because they were once mostly made of adobe or because they were demolished due to destruction and another masjid or mosque was built in their place. For this reason, there are very few mosques that have survived to the present day. We can say that Akkavuk Masjid is one of them.
Akkavuk Masjid, which is located in the historical Surlariçi area of Nicosia and has a rectangular plan, was built using cut stone. In 1895, there was a very small mosque in the place where the mosque was located, but in 1904 this mosque was rebuilt and took its present form.
Akkavuk Masjid, located on Toros Street, is in a large garden. The arched spaces of the masjid, whose congregation place is in the north direction, are closed with glass. The floor of Akkavuk Masjid, in which mosaic tiles are used, is wooden. Two arches carry the roof of the building, which is covered with tiles.
Although there is not much information about Akkavuk Masjid, there is a tombstone in the garden of the mosque.
