Statement About the Attack on Bayraktar Mosque in Southern Cyprus

An isolated attack was carried out on the Bayraktar Mosque in Southern Cyprus on January 11, 2025.

During the afternoon prayer, the mosque was attacked by an unidentified person or persons with glass bottles. Witnesses reported that one of the attackers, with a knife in his hand, threatened citizens who were performing their religious duties. As a result of the detection studies carried out in the mosque after the attack, it was stated that the material damage was worth 14,500 Euros. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was informed from the first moment of the incident, made the necessary contacts, especially with the United Nations Peace Force officials.

It was determined that the attacker was a substance-addicted immigrant.

It was learned that the attacker, who was arrested by the Greek police, was a drug addict and carried out the attacks unconsciously. According to Greek Cypriot law, the person who was only detained for a short period of time was released by the competent authorities.
We declare that we will follow up this isolated incident and invite the authorities to take the necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents from recurring and to prevent the disruption of worship.
