Selimiye Mosque

History

Originally built in the 13th century as a cathedral in French Gothic style, this grand structure was converted into a mosque in 1570 following the Ottoman conquest of Nicosia and renamed Selimiye Mosque. It is one of the largest and most striking religious buildings in Cyprus. Its architectural character is defined by medieval European features merged with later Ottoman additions. Inside, visitors can find historic frescoes, arched structures, and intricate stonework. Serving as the city’s main religious center for centuries, the mosque is still open for both worship and tourism. It remains one of the most iconic landmarks reflecting Cyprus’s layered religious and cultural history.
