Şemsuddin Hacı Ahmet Efendi's voice was shaking as two drops of tears spilled from his eyes and dripped onto his white beard. The lady who brought her coffee could not stand it and asked:

“I am very sorry about the last earthquake, madam,” answered Ahmet Efendi; And I had this concern: What if such a disaster occurs again and everyone is able to repair their own houses and shelters… At that time, it will not be time to repair the schools and mosques and the students will be deprived of education for a long time!…

As it is known, in the past, mosques were built alone, as well as in the form of a social complex with buildings such as schools, soup kitchens and baths around them. These were kept alive with the proceeds of the foundation.

-What is your intention, blessed sir?

– It is possible that fire, earthquake, etc., to the mosque, school and other buildings in our neighborhood. If there is any damage due to reasons such as… Would you consent to that too?

He bowed to his wife with a smile:

"May Allah make his intentions pure," he said.

Thereupon, the service of the foundation, which was established in Istanbul by Ahmet Efendi, known by the nickname Hasşab Hacı İskenderzade, by allocating 500 dirhams, was determined as follows:

"… In case of an earthquake or fire, with the silver money I set aside for the foundation, the mosque, school and other places written in this foundation should be repaired with care, and this should continue even after centuries…"

It is because of this foundation that the neighborhood in Istanbul's Kasımpaşa district was given the name of Hacı Ahmet today: the mosque and school with the same name have survived to this day thanks to this foundation.
