Ömeriye Mosque
One of the oldest mosques in southern Nicosia bearing Ottoman traces
History
Ömeriye Mosque was built shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571. It is considered one of the oldest Ottoman mosques in Nicosia. The site formerly housed an Augustinian monastery. Constructed in traditional Ottoman architectural style, it is distinguished by delicate stonework. Its dome and simple ornamentation reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of that era. There are also local legends attributing the work to Mimar Sinan. Today, it is used both for worship and for cultural visits. Ömeriye Mosque is an important historic building preserving Ottoman heritage in southern Nicosia.
